Marie McDonagh and Conor Walsh met at the All Ireland Hurling minors final in 2014. Hitting it off immediately, the pair arranged to meet two weeks later at the replay and from a love of hurling came a love for each other. Connor popped the question on March 2017 during a holiday to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. “I was very surprised and didn’t expect it at all. In fact, I thought he was joking until he told me he had asked my father’s permission before we left! When we got home, we visited both of our families to tell them the news in person, which is something we’ll remember forever,” Marie recalls fondly. September 14, 2018 was selected as the wedding date, with a ceremony in Church of the immaculate Conception in Co. Tipperary. As the stunning bride works in marketing with Só Hotels, she knew how stunning Castletroy Park Hotel would be for a wedding, and so the pair opted for the award- winning hotel as their reception venue.
Marie recalls walking down the aisle as a particularly special moment for her. “It was quite emotional for me, it was at that point that it hit me that we were actually getting married,” Marie reveals. For Conor, the moment in which the pair said ‘I do’ was the highlight of his day.
After the ceremony, the newly-weds and their wedding party got a boat to Portumna Castle and Gardens for their wedding photos, which the pair recall as a great addition to their day. “It was lovely to kick back and relax with some prosecco and snacks after the busy morning,” Marie adds.
Both Marie and Conor are particularly grateful to their families and loved ones for making their day so personal special. “My brother drove the wedding car and had a wedding playlist made for us which was very sweet. My sister also surprised us with a poem during the speeches which had everyone in stitches. I loved all of the speeches, they were both funny and heartfelt,” Marie explains.
How was your experience with Castletroy Park Hotel?
“Having had my UL graduation in The Castletroy Park Hotel a few years ago, little did I think at the time I would be returning to get married here someday so it was lovely to come back. I worked closely with the team at The Castletroy Park Hotel who were fantastic from start to finish. We got so many compliments on the food which we had worked closely with the chefs to customise to our tastes. The team were great to work with and nothing was too much of an ask. The new garden terrace and fountains were also ideal for our family photos. A sincere thank you to the entire team there.”
