Hilary Orpen met Stephen Ryan, or fondly known as Ryano, while working in a nightclub in Shannon. Ryano, a bouncer at the time was taken with Hilary who performed at the club with the Shannon Musical Society. Once the pair realised they were more than friends, a romance sparked between them. They were together 10 years before kicking things up a notch with the perfect proposal. “(Stephen) decorated the house with candles and after a day of shopping I came home to him waiting with our dog to propose,” the bride remembers fondly.

Breaking the rules of the superstitious, a wedding date was set for January, Friday 13. With the dream date set, the details began to take shape with a ceremony at The Wells Church followed by a reception at Loughrae Hotel and Spa.  Hilary’s bridesmaids included Aine Carroll Aisling Power, Aisling Danagher, Sauna Merrigan, Carol Murphy and Katie Orpen. Stephen was joined at the alter by Donough Kenny, Bruce and Stuart Orpen, David O’Shaughnessy and Dave Lee and Jack Ryan.

A very special something old..

“Ryano’s birth mom passed away shortly after he was born. His mom now, Ann, held onto his birth mom’s wedding band for him and presented it to him a month before the wedding. The ring was then incorporated into Ryano’s wedding band from Tadgh O Flynn jewellers in Ennis. Tadgh made Hilary’s one to match the shape of engagement ring,” the bride said.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH GARY COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY?

Gary was brilliant, down to putting the ribbon on the car and just helping out on the day. He is an all- rounder and not just a photographer, he was brilliant. He was great with directions for photos on the day too.

SPECIAL TOUCHES

Hilary recorded herself singing the entrance song. She went Peech Studios the week prior to the wedding. Derek Barrett recorded and Lorraine Devaney playing guitar and she recorded ‘The Girl’ by Dallas Green” for her walk up the aisle.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT LOUGH REA HOTEL AND SPA?

“My cousin recommended Lough Rea Hotel to us and after meeting with wedding coordinator Karen, we loved the place. It was away from home and everybody got a night away and could fully relax. It was the only venue we checked out and after initial viewing we knew it was right for us. The hotel was fantastic and even kept up all the fairy lights from the Christmas season at our request.”
